Nuno Araujo

Biography

Nuno Araújo (Braga, 1981) is a Full Professor at the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. He obtained his PhD in Physics in 2009 from the University of Minho (Portugal), with a research internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA). He then moved to ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Hans Herrmann for three years, followed by two years as a senior researcher. In 2014, he returned to Portugal as a Principal Investigator with funding from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) under the FCT Investigator program. He completed his habilitation in Physics in 2017 at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, where he was appointed Assistant Professor in 2016, Associate Professor in 2021, and Full Professor in 2024.

His research is conducted at the Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics, focusing on Non-Equilibrium Physics, with particular emphasis on Active Matter, Granular Materials, and Micro-scale Origami/Kirigami. He is the co-author of over 100 publications in his field, featured in prestigious journals such as Nature Communications, Science Advances, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Physical Review Letters, and Physical Review E. He is frequently invited to speak at international conferences.

He is also actively involved in knowledge valorization and innovation processes. He serves as an associate editor for Physical Review E, published by the American Physical Society, and as a consultant for the European Space Agency. Additionally, he is the Vice-President of the Data Science Portuguese Association and a member of the Advisory Board of COTEC Portugal.
